[ag-before-rating]Review Summary:
The Waste King L-1001 garbage disposer offers decent 1/2 HP performance at a good price, but it makes more sense to consider the stainless steel grinding chamber and 5 year warranty offered by the (only slightly) more expensive Waste King L-2600.

Pros: Compact, good performance, easy installation, power cord included

Cons: 2 year warranty only, better options available for not much extra

Waste King L-1001 Review

The Waste King 1001 is a basic, 1/2 HP garbage disposal unit. It comes with all the standard features you’d expect on an entry-level garbage disposer, including a galvanized steel grinding chamber and a fairly short warranty.

Is there anything to make this unit worth the few bucks you save over better quality models? Let’s have a quick look.

Installation

This model ships with the Waste King EZ mount system, which doesn’t require any bolting and makes for a fairly easy installation. At only around 9 pounds this is not a difficult piece of equipment to handle underneath a sink, so you shouldn’t have any problems doing the installation alone.

It is also considerably thinner than the other 1/2 HP model in the Waste King lineup, the L-2600. So, if you are really pushed for space under your sink, the L-1001 makes a good case for itself.

There’s nothing funny about the installation then and all normal rules apply: it’s ready to go for a stainless steel sink, but if you don’t have one you’ll need to buy plumber’s putty separately for the installation.

A power cord and 3-prong plug is included in the box, so if you have a plug box below your sink you can just plug it in and off you go.

Waste King Legend L-1001 In Action

Okay, so what can you expect from this waste disposal once you start operating it? The 1.2 HP motor is quite powerful and as long as you don’t overload it it does a fine job. Noise levels are acceptable, but you’re not going to expect a whisper quiet operation from a disposal unit in this price range and, as expected, the L-1001 doesn’t deliver that. Noise levels will also be influenced by the type of sink you’re using.

The feeding hole is quite small so you’ll need to push larger objects down the drain to send them on their way. The flip side of this is it makes it harder for unwanted smaller objects to accidentally fall into the disposer, so in the end it’s all square.

There’s not a whole lot else to say. The Waste King L-1001 seems like a good, capable performer with a high RPM of 2,600.

Bottom Line: The Waste King Legend L-1001 1/2 HP offers fantastic value. Perhaps the big drawback comes lies the fact that, for roughly $15-$20 more, you can get the Waste King L-2600 which offers a 5 year in-home warranty thanks to its stainless steel grinding chamber.

It is a slightly more bulky unit than the L-1001 though, so for compact convenience this model still has a lot to offer.

Buying Advice: Amazon offers great prices on these models.
