Waste King doesn’t mess around – at 2800 RPM this beastly disposal unit looks set to devour just about anything thrown at it within reasonable limits. The design has gotten a face lift from the old models of a few years ago. It is still pretty tall as just shy of 19 inches, with a reasonable weight of 13lbs.
This is a batch feed disposal unit, in other words it grinds waste in batches. You insert the waste you want into the unit and the you start it with an action activated by the included drain stopper. It is no less efficient than continuous feed models and some prefer batch feed for additional safety, especially if you have small children in your house.
The package is quite complete with flange, drain stopper, splash guard, power cord, drain elbow and mounting assembly all included. With a few basic tools you’re ready to go if you choose a DIY installation.
Installation
The Waste King L-8000TC uses the EZ Mount system, which facilitates a bolt-free installation. At 16 pounds and about 19 inches tall this is a fairly heavy and bulky unit. It will be wise to make sure you have enough space for the installation before proceeding with a purchase.
Naturally, a second person to help you may speed things up, but it is not crucial to completing the installation successfully. If someone is close at hand you’re not going to lose anything by asking them to assist.
Included in the package is a rubber gasket that can be used instead of plumber’s putty on stainless steel sinks. If you have any other type of sink though, you’ll need to use plumber’s putty and remove the rubber gasket.
The EZ mount system really is easy to mount by following the instructions. The unit is fixed with a simple turn of a mounting ring after all the parts have been put in place in their correct order.
The mounting ring makes installation easy.
It is worth mentioning that this model is also safe for use on septic tanks. The unit is also dishwasher compatible.
Included in the package is a 3-prong plug together with a 36-inch power cord. If you have a wall outlet nearby you can be up and running that much quicker, with no hard-wiring into the electrical supply required.

Whichever way you look at it, 1 HP is a lot of power inside a compact unit like a garbage disposal. It’s no wonder that these strong units can take care of just about anything you throw into them.
The all stainless steel grinding mechanism will help extend the longevity of the product. The L-8000TC does a fine job of grinding up garbage.
The unit is operated by a cap that you twist on to make it go. This is, of course, a necessary safety measure and it works well. The cap is plastic, unfortunately, but sturdy enough. Something metal may have made me feel just a little bit better in a quality sense, but it’s not something that’s worth losing sleep over.
The normal Waste King noise reductions are in place, and they do a decent job. Insinkerator units are still more quiet overall than Waste King, but this is not noisy enough to be bothersome.
