InSinkErator Evolution Compact Review
The moment you lay eyes on the InSinkErator Evolution Compact garbage disposal unit you’re going to wish you didn’t have to hide it away under the sink. This is a beautifully designed piece of equipment that won’t look out of place on your kitchen counter next to the espresso machine.
Since looks is probably the least of your concerns when it comes to garbage disposers, let’s see whether the Evolution Compact is more than just a pretty face.
Installation
Both the installation instructions and the installation for this unit itself are simple and easy to follow. For most people, removing their old garbage disposal is the most difficult part of the installation.
Some modifications may be required to the plumbing, depending on your sink. If you are replacing an older InSinkErator model, like the Badger for example, the installation should be a breeze. The lock sink mount is practical and easy to work with.
Note that this unit doesn’t ship with a power cord. It is designed to be hard-wired into your home electric supply. Attaching a cord and plug if you want to use a receptacle instead may require the help of an electrician if you’re not up to scratch on wiring and plug installation.
So, in this regard InSinkErator could definitely have made things a little easier by, for example, including a cord and plug with an easy way of attaching it to the unit.
You’ll need some plumber’s putty for the installation as well. I am well pleased with the size of this unit, certainly a lot easier to work with than the more bulky units that Waste King is known for.
InSinkErator Evolution Compact In Action
The technology used to keep it quiet is very effective, and the low noise level is one of the first things that will impress you when you turn this unit on. The claim is that it is 30% quieter than comparable waste disposals, and while the human ears is not too good at measuring percentages, that sounds about right. The quiet operation is a result of both sound insulation around the motor and vibration dampening on the sink mount and tail pipe.
The machine uses a two-stage grind system to pulverize foods. This seems to be very effective as jams are seldom reported with this unit. The stainless steel grind chamber should increase the longevity of the product as well.
The powerful 3/4 horsepower motor seems plenty powerful enough for most household waste. You don’t get high revolutions, but then you don’t need it with the grind system in use here.
So far this looks like the perfect garbage disposal (apart from the electric wiring which could have afforded more user-friendly options).
However, digging deeper I did find some longevity issues with this unit, with many people reporting rust, while motor failure after 3-5 years was also a problem. The 4-year warranty doesn’t match up to the lifetime corrosion warranty offered by a brand like Waste King on many of their models.
Bottom Line: The InSinkErator Evolution Pro has a lot going for it. It is powerful, fairly quiet and smooth and does a good job pulverizing most foods. Its compact size is another plus. While some people have expressed concerns about longevity, I couldn’t find enough reports of early failure online to suggest it being a major problem. The quiet and low vibration operation are this unit’s biggest selling points.
