InSinkErator Evolution Cover Control 3/4 HP Review

When it comes to batch-feed garbage disposals, you’re not exactly spoilt for choice. Continuous feed disposals are much more popular and therefore the selection of models is much wider.

However, with a model like the Insinkerator Cover Control you don’t need a whole lot of choice. This is a powerful, solidly built batch-feed disposal. It may be on the expensive side, but it delivers performance and quality in spades.

The 40 oz stainless steel grinding chamber and stainless steel grinding components means you have a long-lasting unit providing powerful corrosion resistance.

Let’s review this model to see what it has to offer.

Installation

Insinkerator units always offer one little difficulty with installation: their weight. We’re not complaining too much about that as it is a testament to just how solidly these machines are are built, but it does make a solo installation challenging. Best to get help and save yourself some frustration.

The 3-bolt Quick Lock Sink Mount makes installation fairly easy, especially when you’re replacing an existing Insinkerator disposer. With help you shouldn’t have to spend more than an hour or so on the installation, depending on whether any piping modifications may be required.

The Evolution Cover Control, like most Insinkerator models, does not feature a power cord or plug as it is meant to be hard-wired.

InSinkErator Evolution Cover Control Use and Performance

The Cover Control features a unique on/off operation. Called the “Magnetic CoverStart Activation system”, you basically turn the unit on and off by twisting the cover.

This is possible thanks to the use of two magnets each in the cover and the disposer. When aligned with a twist of the cover, the turn the disposer on. This is quite an ingenious and safe method of operation.

One caveat is that some people report the magnetic system not working on their cast iron sinks. This is difficult to predict as it doesn’t affect all cast iron sinks, but if you have one you should be wary that you my run into problems with the cover control system.

Sound

We’ve come to trust Insinkerator as making the quietest garbage disposer on the market, and the Cover Control is no exception. It is rated as 60% quieter than standard disposal, and while I can’t vouch for percentages, this is an exceptionally quiet unit, with one user calling it about as quiet as his electric toothbrush.

Various anti-vibration technologies and buffers add to the smooth and quiet operation.

Grinding

What we have here is Insinkerator’s 2-stage Multigrind system that combines a Grindshear ring with a Tri-Action Lug system. This ensures fine grinding of food while minimizing the chance of jams.

Powered by a 3/4 HP motor, this leads to excellent grinding performance from the Evolution Cover Control. Even tougher waste like potato and lemon peels is effectively disposed of.

Bottom Line: The Insinkerator Cover Control is a powerful batch-feed garbage disposer with a solid stainless steel construction and innovative magnetic on/off operation. It is expensive, but it should last a long time and handle just about anything you can throw at it. Backed by a 7-year warranty, this is a solid investment.
