Waste King 9920 Review

The 9920 is Waste King’s entry level 0.5HP garbage disposal unit. The major difference between this and the more popular L-2600 model is that the 9920 has a galvanized steel grind system versus the stainless steel system on the 2600.

Obviously the latter model will be more rust and corrosion proof than the 9920. This begs the question then: is there any sense in saving 10 or 20 bucks and getting this model instead of the 2600 with its better warranty and stainless steel insides? Let’s take a look.

Installation

The first thing you notice when installing this unit is that it features a 3-bolt sink mount, not the EZ sink mount found on the L-2600 and various other Waste King models. There’s nothing wrong with this mount and it’s not particularly difficult to install.

Not that the plumber’s putty you’ll require is not included and you need to purchase it separately. You may also need some additional piping, depending on your current sink setup.

As is customary the unit includes a power cord, so if you already have a power box handy beneath the sink getting this going after bolting it and attaching the pipes is as simple as plugging it in and flicking the switch. If you want to hard wire it into your electrical supply, things get a little more complicated of course.

So, no big hassles with the installation on this end, but the time and effort it takes will vary from one sink setup to the next.

The Waste King 9920 in action

It’s a 0.5HP unit, so while it’s got a fair bit of power under the hood, don’t expect it to gobble up whatever you throw at it. Despite the high 2,600RPM, you still need to be cautious about overloading this unit.

However, with basic household leftovers and food waste it does a decent job. It’s not the quietest waste disposal unit you’ll ever use, but it will be unfair to call it excessively noisy either. Pretty much par for the course in that respect.

There has been a few complaints about the difficulty of clearing jams on this unit. While it shouldn’t jam if you use it carefully, there’s always the possibility and with the 9920, as with most Waste King units, you have to ram a broomstick into it to try and clear the mess. It does work, but it’s crude and may not be sufficient to clear one of those freak jams that happen every so often.

Bottom Line: The Waste King 9920 is a decent enough 0.5HP disposal system and solid value for money.

The question I set out to answer at the beginning of this review though s whether it is worth saving 20 dollars or so by getting this unit as opposed to the stainless steel L-2600 with its 5 year home / lifetime corrosion warranty. There’s nothing wrong with the 9920, but you should definitely get more life out of the stainless steel model. It’s basically a case of your budget, your choice. I’d recommend spending a little extra.
